Traditionally, the main approaches for gynecological surgery have included laparoscopic or open procedures. Robotic surgery is a recent advancement aimed at improving surgical outcomes for women with specific conditions.
Robotic-assisted surgery is an alternative approach to performing surgical procedures using keyhole incisions. While using the robotic system to carry out your operation, the surgeon sits at a remote console, located next to you in the operating room, as shown in the image above. The surgeon has full control of the robotic arms, allowing them to perform the procedure with exceptional precision and greater flexibility, which is particularly important for more complex surgeries.
One of the robotic arms also contains a high-definition 3D camera, enabling the surgeon to see in great detail. The other two or three robotic arms hold various surgical instruments, which the surgeon uses to perform the operation.
Gynecological procedures that can be performed robotically include:
- Hysterectomy
- Removal of pelvic and para-aortic lymph nodes
- Sentinel lymph node biopsy
- Removal of ovaries and fallopian tubes
- Ovarian cyst removal
- Excision of endometriosis
- Myomectomy (removal of fibroids)
- Specialized pelvic organ prolapse surgeries
There are many different reasons why you may need surgery, and your gynecologist will discuss them with you, including the specific procedure and method that best suits your needs.
Robotic surgery offers several benefits, such as:
- Avoiding open surgery
- Shorter hospital stay
- Less pain
- Reduced risk of wound infection
- Less blood loss, reducing the need for blood transfusion
- Reduced scarring
- Faster recovery after hospital discharge
- Quicker return to normal activities, such as driving
Most gynecological procedures can be performed using conventional laparoscopic (keyhole) or open abdominal incisions. Some procedures can also be performed vaginally. Your gynecologist will discuss with you the most appropriate surgical approach for your case, as well as the risks and benefits of each option.
