Trying to Conceive – Timed Intercourse

Getting pregnant isn’t always straightforward. Sometimes, conception takes longer than expected, and various factors can contribute to the delay. Generally, 90% of couples under 35 will conceive within one year, while couples over 36 are advised to try for six months before seeking fertility advice.

Understanding Ovulation and Conception

For pregnancy to occur, a woman must ovulate, meaning she must release a mature egg. During the first phase of the menstrual cycle:

  • The body releases Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), stimulating the growth of 10–12 follicles in the ovaries.
  • One dominant follicle matures while the others regress.
  • Around two weeks later, a surge in Luteinizing Hormone (LH) triggers ovulation.
  • The egg is released from the ovary 2–3 days after the LH surge and must be fertilized within 24 hours.

Irregular or absent ovulation is one of the most common causes of infertility.

What is Timed Intercourse?

Timed intercourse involves tracking ovulation to optimize the chances of fertilization by ensuring intercourse occurs at the most fertile time.

How to Track Ovulation?

  • Basal Body Temperature (BBT): Slightly increases just before ovulation due to hormone production. A lack of temperature rise may indicate no ovulation.
  • Ultrasound Monitoring: The most accurate method for tracking follicle growth and confirming ovulation.
