Colposcopy is an important diagnostic procedure used for a detailed examination of the cervix, vagina, and external genitalia. A colposcope (a specialized microscope) is used to detect any abnormalities. The process is very similar to a Pap smear test and is performed without anesthesia, as it is generally painless.
When Should a Colposcopy Be Performed?
Colposcopy is recommended in the following cases:
- Abnormal Pap Smear results
- Visible abnormalities on the cervix during a gynecological examination
- Presence of external genital warts (HPV-related lesions)
- Persistent cervical infections that do not resolve with treatment
- Unexplained vaginal bleeding, such as bleeding after sexual intercourse or frequent episodes of abnormal bleeding
- Patient history indicating a need for further cervical evaluation
Preparation for the Examination
Colposcopy can be performed on any day of the menstrual cycle, except during menstruation. Sexual intercourse should be avoided for 2-3 days before the procedure to ensure accurate results.
