Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows the surgeon to access the inside of the abdomen and pelvis without making large skin incisions. This technique is also known as keyhole surgery or minimally invasive surgery.

Unlike traditional open surgery, large incisions are avoided because the surgeon uses a laparoscope—a thin, flexible tube equipped with a light source and a camera. This device transmits images of the internal organs to a monitor, allowing the surgeon to perform the procedure with precision.

During the procedure, the patient is under general anesthesia, and the abdomen is filled with carbon dioxide gas. This inflation of the abdomen improves visibility, making it easier to examine the pelvic reproductive organs.

Advantages of Laparoscopy

Compared to traditional open surgery, laparoscopy offers several benefits:

  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Reduced pain and bleeding after surgery
  • Faster recovery and return to daily activities
  • Minimal scarring on the skin and fewer internal adhesions
  • Less postoperative discomfort

Conditions Treated with Laparoscopy

Laparoscopic surgery is the preferred method for most gynecological procedures. Some common gynecological conditions treated with laparoscopy include:

  • Fibroids (Uterine Myomas)
  • Ovarian Cysts
  • Endometriosis
  • Endometrial Hyperplasia
  • Infertility
  • Pelvic and Abdominal Adhesions
  • Gynecological Cancer (Endometrial, Cervical, Ovarian)
  • Pelvic Organ Prolapse
  • Ectopic Pregnancy

Recovery After Laparoscopy

  • Hospital stay: Typically1-2 days, depending on the complexity of the procedure.
  • Full recovery: Ranges froma few days to 1-2 weeks, depending on the type of surgery and the patient’s overall health.
  • Return to work: Most patients can resume work within1-2 weeks.
  • Resuming physical activities: Light exercise can start within4-6 weeks post-surgery.
